Halloween Nails – Spooky Eyes, Glow-in-the-Dark
I had so much fun creating these little eyes for my Halloween nails last year. And even Nails Magazine expressed interest in publishing this design in their October issue. Alas, I didn’t make the cut.
I was inspired by a small Halloween light set that we wrap around a bush for the holiday. And this was my first black manicure….ever! It scared the stuff out of me because it seemed too bold, but I’m known to wear deep reds, so it wasn’t as shocking as I thought it would be…. I’ve now been converted. I love black designs especially with flakie topcoats!
The trick with black polish is to STAY AWAY from your cuticles and sidewalls! Even using acetone to clean up, black polish just refuses to “pretty up” as you can see in the close up steps below.
I decided to paint glow-in-the-dark paint over the eyes so I could have some fun with my kids. Although they ooo’d and ahh’d, it did take me twice as long to paint. I used acrylic craft paint for the neon colors and then Glo-It paint by DecoArt. If you use only the glow-in-the-dark paint, the design will be a pale yellow and won’t show much during the day.
If you have glow-in-the-dark polishes, they might work better. But I don’t own any….I know….shocking! 500+ polishes and none of them glow in the dark. What do you think of this design?
Have Fun! ~Ana
Base CoatsSTEP 1: Basecoat – to protect your nails and create a surface that nail polish bonds to
STEP 2: 2 coats of your favorite black polish
Green EyesSTEP 3: Using large dotting tool tip, make two green dots
STEP 4: With a fine detail brush, paint a small triangle on either side of the two dots. Fill in.
STEP 5: Then paint angry eyebrows with the detail brush and green paint
STEP 6: With a smaller dotting tool tip, make 2 black polish dots for the eyes.
STEP 7: With green paint and small dotting tool, create two smaller dots inside of the black dots.
Yellow EyesFollow steps 3, 4 and 6 only
STEP 8: Using large dotting tool tip, make two pink dots. Pull the dots down a little bit to make them oval.
STEP 9: Then paint curious eyebrows with the detail brush and pink paint
STEP 10: Then add two small “C” stroke lines on either side of the eyes to represent movement
STEP 11: With a smaller dotting tool tip, make 2 black polish dots for the eyes
STEP 13: Seal with your favorite topcoat to protect your art and give your manicure a great shine
TIP: To get those tiny green dots in the Green guy’s eyes, barely touch the dotting tool to your nail. You may need to add a drop of water to your paint palette to get smaller dots.
