SIMPLE TUTORIAL: Holographic Striping Tape on Black – by Karianne at Neglelakkmani.com
482 shares on Google can’t be wrong—people love this manicure. As most of you can tell, it’s a pretty simple design with my tips for striping tape. The tutorial is below the photo. Have fun! ~Ana
PS: Giving proper credit to Karianne was quite a detective mission. This manicure is extremely popular all over Pinterest and photo hosting sites, but with no watermark. I am so pleased to find the rightful designer and properly watermark her photo on her behalf. If you would like to save/pin her photo without my frame, please go directly to her website and save/pin the photo from there, so it remains linked to the original artist.
STEP 1: Basecoat – to protect your nails and create a surface that nail polish bonds to. STEP 2. 2 coats of your favorite black polish STEP 3: Cut a piece of striping tape a little longer than the width of your nail. STEP 4: Using tweezers, tack the middle of the tape to the highest point of the curve of your nail plate. You should now have a piece of tape sticking out in the air on both sides of your nail. STEP 5: Using your finger or a dotting tool, carefully smooth the tape down each side, but not quite to the ends. STEP 6: Using the smallest scissors you have, trim the tape just shy of the sidewall edge of your nail. (You will be able to seal those tape ends with your topcoat for better wear.) STEP 7: Topcoat – To seal in your design and give it a high gloss shine. Remember to topcoat the free edge and underside. This extends wear and reduces water absorption, which causes peeling and chipping.
TIP: It looks like Karianne actually topcoated first, then applied the tape. This will keep the shine of the tape better, but will not last more than a day or two of you getting dressed, using the restroom, doing dishes, etc. So it’s a trade off.
If sealed, this design will wear much better than if you use the tape diagonally across your nail and finishing at the nail tip. Why? Simple wear and tear. The tape will start to peel back from the tips. If it does, just trim it and reseal with another coat of topcoat. Most people won’t notice that the tape doesn’t quite go to the end of your nails.
Remember, this design will work with any nail color.
